Large-scale operations (1000 animal units or more) are required to apply for a WPDES permit before reaching 1000 animal units, and to reapply every five years. WPDES Permits focus on pollution prevention through sound planning,. construction and manure management. Smaller-scale operations (less than 1000 animal units) could receive a Notice of Discharge (NOD). Under the NOD program, technical and financial assistance may be available to help these operators correct discharge problems.
