NU00-32 Project Title:

Nutrient Management Farmer Education Program

Current Status:

  Active

Project Summary:

This project will enable farmers to develop nutrient management plans for their farms that will protect and improve water quality. The program will be a joint effort with the University of Wisconsin-Extension, the Land and Water Resources Department of Polk County, and the Natural Resources and Conservation Service. Special emphasis will be put on identifying moderate-sized family farms that specialize in dairy or livestock production and have a significant impact on water quality due to their proximal to surface water or their vulnerability to soil erosion. The goal of the program is to enroll 15 farms that average about 200 crop acres per farm. Following workshops, each participant will develop a nutrient management plan with assistance from UWEX and LWRD staff. After completing their nutrient management plans, each participant will receive a $300 incentive payment.
