NU00-42 Project Title:

Nutrient Management Project of Fond du Lac County

Current Status:

  Active

Project Summary:

This project will involve 10 farmers in high-ranked water quality management areas that are not funded watersheds at the present time. Preparing a nutrient management plan requires farmers to make changes to the crop plan they have been following for many years. One of those changes will be to have their soil tested at 5-acre increments. In order to educate farmers on the importance of crediting on-farm nutrient resources, other lab analysis will also have to be done. These tests include manure analysis, and pre-sidedress nitrate tests. The goal is to maintain uniform nutrient distribution on the farm so nutrient levels do not exceed the crop needs. Training seminars, field demonstrations and one-on-one sessions with farmers will occur during the three year project.

Main Activities:

  • Nitrogen and Phosphorus workshops
  • Presidedress nitrate tests (confirms proper nutrient crediting)
  • Calibrated manure spreaders
  • Manure management meeting
  • Updated conservation plan
  • Updated soil testing
