There are numerous tools you can use to lessen your impact in riparian areas:
-- Use pre-construction erosion control measures like silt fences, straw bales etc. to protect sensitive areas.
-- Limit impervious surfaces and build detention and filtration ponds.
-- Leave sufficient buffer areas.
-- Limit land disturbing activities; the more sensitive the site (steep slopes erodible soil), the smaller the land disturbance.
-- Give flexibility and incentives to folks that build the proper way (such as free nursery stock, density of homes, limited only by your imagination).
-- Develop a compliance certification for owners and contractors.
-- Protect sensitive areas such as wetlands, slopes, habitat corridors and forested areas.
-- Develop land use plans that consider density and patterns of development.
-- Consider using land trust or conservation easements. Strive for administrative efficiency.
-- Coordinate with other management approaches to share dollars and grants.
