Site Description

The harvest site is fairly typical of scrub oak woodland sites in southwest Wisconsin. Prior to the harvest, the trees were primarily black oak, but also included white and red oak as well as jack and white pine.
As a consequence of its southern exposure, the trees in this site were of smaller size, poorer quality, and lower vigor than those in other sites on the property. Since oaks tend to be able to tolerate these relatively harsh, dry conditions better than most other hardwood species, oak was considered easier to regenerate here. Maintaining a healthy oak component on the property will promote the acorn production that benefits wildlife, which is one of the landowner's objectives.
